Janovice Castle

Janovice Castle was the seat of the owners of the Janovice (formerly Rabštejn) estate. The original late Gothic fortress was built between 1520 and 1530 by the pledge lord Petr of Žerotín. It was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle by Ferdinand Hoffmann of Grünbüchl, a personal friend of Emperor Rudolf II. In 1721, after a short Dietrichstein period, the manor passed into the ownership of the Jilemnice Counts of Harrach, with whom it remained until the Second World War. During their administration, the castle was expanded to its current form and rebuilt several times. The last modifications took place during the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, when a Nordic arboretum was also created in the castle park. After the war, the family's property was confiscated, part of the furniture was exported to Hungary, some was placed in the Liběchov castle, and most of it was destroyed or stolen. In the years 2011–2018, the Janovice castle was made accessible by the Rýmařov Town Museum, which, in cooperation with a number of local organisations and volunteers, also provided a cultural program for the summer season (summer cinemas, concerts, theatres, readings, etc.). Since 2019, the Janovice castle has been under the administration of the National Heritage Institute.
